Every year, European Voice, an Economist Group newspaper published in Brussels, presents in a special ceremony The Europeans of the Year awards to persons who have excelled in the European Union and in the entire world in ten categories, among which journalism, business administration, diplomacy, and politics, and to the person who is acknowledged as the European of the Year for 2004.European Voice presents the awards to the winners in each category, who are selected after a poll by European Voice readers and by visitors to the newspaper’s website. The polls closed on 12 November.
The nominee evaluation panel is composed of the following personalities: former Cypriot Prime Minister, Mr Giorgos Vasileiou; former Swedish Prime Minister, Mr Carl Bildt; former Belgian Prime Minster, Mr Wilfried Martens; Economist Editor, Mr Bill Emmott; Dean of the College of Europe, Dr Paul Demaret; Deputy Director of the Centre of European Reform, Dr Heather Grabbel; Director of the Bertelsmann Foundation, Mrs Annette Heuser; and European Voice Editor, Mrs Dana Spinant.
Nominees for the European of the Year category for 2004 include: the ATHENS 2004 President, Mrs Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki; the Greek National Football Team Coach, Mr Otto Rehhagell; the British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair; European Parliament Member, Mr Paul Van Buitenen; and the Head of the European Defence Agency, Mr Nick Witney.
Nominees in other categories include famous US cyclist Lance Armstrong, former Palestinian Authority Minister Mohammed Dahlan, Financial Times journalist Quentin Peel, Airbus Managing Director Noel Forgeard, director Pedro Almodovar. and actress Emmanuelle Bιart.
Among the personalities presented with the award for 2003 were Robert Fisk, Valιry Giscard d'Estaing, Donald Rumsfeld, Javier Solana, and Pat Cox.
The winners in each category will be announced and presented with their awards at en exclusive reception to be given by Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt at the Palais d’Egmont, the official residence of the Belgian Foreign Minister, on Tuesday 30 November 2004.
