Lifted by a capacity home town crowd, the Greek Women's Water Polo team blasted its way into the gold medal match of the Water Polo competition with a convincing 6-2 victory over current Olympic champions Australia at the Olympic Aquatic Centre on Tuesday evening.The Greeks were on a high after qualifying for the semifinals with a
7-4 win over Russia. They began the game by landing four quick goals in the
first quarter, courtesy of Stavroula KOZOMPOLI, Aikaterini
OIKONOMOPOULOU, Antigoni ROUMPESI and Eftychia KARAGIANNI.
Australia, through Joanne FOX, could score only once in reply.
The second quarter produced torrid defence from both teams until Greece's
Evangelia MORAITIDOU pounded in a goal from centre forward to extend Greece's
lead to 5-1 at half time.
The Australians had mounted several six on five attacks but could not
capitalise on their extra player advantage.
Late in the third period Australia's Jodie STUHMCKE spun in a goal to edge
closer, making the score 5-2. In the final minute of the session Australian
captain, Naomi CASTLE conceded a four metre penalty which was converted by
ROUMPESI for a 6-2 scoreline at the end of the third quarter.
In the final playing period, the two teams traded goal attempts with shots
going wide and the two goalkeepers working overtime. With no score in the final
period, Greece moved into its first Water Polo Final.
It will meet Italy on Thursday, 26 August at 18:15. Italy
defeated current world champ the USA in a nailbiting 6-5 match earlier
in the evening.
